Sonic Superstars is an action platformer that revives the classic side-scrolling style of the Sonic series on PC. Players control Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or Amy across the Northstar Islands to thwart Dr. Eggman and his allies from turning giant animals into Badniks. The game blends familiar high-speed platforming with new abilities unlocked through Chaos Emeralds.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on running through side-scrolling stages filled with loops, springs, and enemies while collecting rings for protection and scoring. Each character brings distinct moves, such as Tails flying short distances or Knuckles gliding and climbing walls. Emerald powers add variety by letting players multiply their character, swim up waterfalls, slow time, or reveal hidden paths. These abilities remain optional, allowing completion of stages without them, though they encourage exploration in the 2.5D environments rendered with full 3D models.
Local co-op supports up to four players who can join or leave at any time during the campaign. All participants share the same screen and progress together through the acts. The hub world connects the zones and offers customization options for characters once progress advances. Rings gathered in large quantities grant medals that unlock further content.
Game Modes
The main campaign unfolds across multiple zones, each divided into acts with three separate story paths that unlock sequentially. Players navigate these levels solo or in co-op to reach the end while avoiding hazards and defeating foes. A fifth character becomes available after the initial stories conclude.
Battle Mode pits players against each other in short competitive rounds. Up to eight participants online or four locally control customizable Metal Fighters in randomly selected challenges. The available rounds include Race to reach the finish line first, Zap Scrap where players shoot opponents for points, Star Snatcher to gather the most stars before time expires, and Survival to remain on collapsing platforms while dodging incoming projectiles. Points accumulate across three rounds to determine the winner. Offline play allows matches against AI or local split-screen opponents.
Time Attack mode lets players replay individual acts to improve completion times and compare results on leaderboards.
Level Design and Progression
Eleven zones feature varied themes such as jungles with vines, carnivals with pinball elements, and industrial factories. Stages draw subtle inspiration from earlier Sonic entries while introducing original layouts and secret areas accessible through Emerald powers. Progression involves clearing acts to advance the story and unlock additional characters and modes. Special stages accessed via checkpoints provide extra challenges for medals and power-ups.
Is It Worth Playing?
Sonic Superstars delivers straightforward platforming suited to fans of classic 2D Sonic games who enjoy local multiplayer sessions. The campaign offers consistent level variety and character-specific paths that reward multiple playthroughs. Battle Mode provides quick competitive matches for groups, though its minigames remain simple. Reception on PC has been mixed, with players noting solid controls and visuals alongside occasional complaints about pacing and depth in non-campaign sections. The game runs well on modern hardware with controller support and continues to receive occasional patches for stability. It suits players seeking a nostalgic action platformer experience with co-op focus rather than those looking for extensive post-launch content or complex systems.
