Writelings is an indie casual simulation game for PC that functions as a desktop companion. A small illustrated writer occupies a corner of the screen and works on their own book only while the player types in any application, from word processors to code editors. The companion pauses and dozes when typing stops, creating a direct link between user activity and in-game progress.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around synchronized typing. Windows notifies the application each time a key is pressed, incrementing a simple count that drives the writer's progress. No specific keys, documents, or window details are recorded or transmitted, preserving complete privacy with no analytics or telemetry involved. The writer sits atop other windows, and mouse clicks pass through to the underlying content. Players can drag the character to any position and resize it as needed.
Books vary in length from short stories of around 500 words to massive tomes reaching millions of words. Completion adds the finished volume to a shelf that generates ongoing ink royalties, even for hours after the application closes. Ink serves as currency to unlock additional writers, each with a unique illustrated scene and desk setup. Examples include a frog wizard beneath a paper lantern, a raftsman on the Mississippi at dawn, a Victorian postmaster mouse by candlelight, a tortoise in a glasshouse, a beret-wearing cloud recording weather, and a pink slime in a dungeon lit from within by a swallowed crystal, using a shield as a desk and an arrow as a pen. Some writers quote favorite authors during their work. Two remain locked until the player has typed 80,000 words of their own.
The interface panel above the writer displays the current book, statistics, shelf, and shop. It supports dark and light skins for compatibility with different screen setups. Hiding the panel leaves only the writer visible at their desk. All progress saves to a single local file on the user's computer, and the application runs entirely offline without accounts or launchers. Built with Electron, the readable source code is available in the install folder for inspection.
Game Modes
Writelings offers no traditional game modes such as multiplayer sessions or separate campaigns. Instead, the experience centers on a persistent single-player desktop companion that operates continuously alongside any typing task. Progression occurs through the shared typing count across all writers and books, with no distinct rulesets or competitive elements. The focus remains on steady accumulation of ink and writers within this unified environment.
Is It Worth Playing?
Writelings suits users seeking a low-pressure simulation that rewards consistent typing habits without demanding dedicated play sessions. Its privacy-focused design, local-only save system, and absence of online requirements make it appealing for those who value data security alongside a whimsical desktop presence. The growing roster of distinct writers and the passive royalty system provide long-term motivation through gradual collection and visual variety. Players who enjoy idle or companion-style simulations will find the mechanics align closely with everyday computer use. Those preferring structured levels, combat, or social features may find the minimalist approach less engaging. Availability is limited to PC, with the full experience delivered through the core desktop integration described in the source materials.
