True Cult is an action indie game on PC that combines auto-scrolling shooter mechanics with roguelite progression. Players lead processions of cultists escorting Pretenders toward sacrifice at the Holy Hole while fending off waves of monsters in evolving environments.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on guiding three processions across thirteen environments that change as play progresses. Cultists advance automatically while the player controls aspects of defense and advancement against relentless enemy hordes unleashed by the Holy Hole. Collecting twelve relics forms a key progression system, with upgrades unlocked through gathered wealth to strengthen the group over time. Twelve distinct Pretenders offer different playstyles, each available until sacrificed, after which that character becomes unavailable for future runs. Cultists evolve through direct combat exposure, gaining improvements that carry forward in the roguelite structure. Provoking stronger monster spawns increases both difficulty and potential rewards, creating risk-reward decisions during each procession.
Game Modes
Single-player sessions focus on completing processions while managing Pretender sacrifices and relic upgrades. Arcade Mode supports co-op play, where teams work together to survive longer runs and compete for high scores against escalating hordes. The mode emphasizes endurance and coordination without altering the fundamental auto-scrolling shooter flow.
Key Mechanics and Systems
Relic collection and wealth-based upgrades encourage repeated attempts as players experiment with different Pretender combinations and provocation levels. Evolving cultists adds a layer of permanent progression within runs, rewarding aggressive play that sends followers into battle. The sacrifice system limits Pretender reuse, pushing players to rotate characters strategically across multiple attempts. Environments shift progressively, introducing new challenges that test adaptation to the Holy Hole's increasing aggression.
Is It Worth Playing?
True Cult targets fans of auto-scrolling shooters and roguelite systems who enjoy managing limited resources and character rotations under pressure. Its co-op Arcade Mode adds a competitive scoring element suitable for groups seeking high-score challenges. As an upcoming title planned for 2027 with no user reviews available yet, the game remains in development, and interested players can monitor official channels for updates on its release and final feature set. Those drawn to indie action games with sacrifice mechanics and procession-based progression will find the described systems align with that preference.
