Runes of Shadow is a PC-based online multiplayer action combat game that combines PvP and PvE elements across the action, indie, RPG, and adventure genres. Players engage in fast-paced battles where teams coordinate to control objectives while leveling up during each session. The core loop centers on shared team experience that unlocks perks mid-match, creating opportunities for strategic shifts without any carryover advantages from prior games.
Gameplay
Combat emphasizes direct player confrontations mixed with encounters against AI-controlled threats. Teams advance through shared progression systems that distribute experience evenly, allowing every participant to access new perks as levels rise within the session. This structure keeps focus on immediate tactics and coordination rather than long-term character builds. Movement and ability use adapt to both arena-style duels and larger map-based fights, rewarding quick decisions and team synergy over individual power spikes.
Game Modes
The Arena mode supports matches sized from 1v1 through 5v5, with victory going to the first team to secure three wins. These structured encounters highlight direct combat skill and quick adaptation. Separate MOBA matches unfold across lanes, jungle areas, dungeons, and boss encounters where teams compete for map objectives. Experience flows to the entire group, unlocking perks that influence ongoing fights. Planned expansions include a 20v20 war mode for large-scale engagements and procedurally generated PvE dungeons that let groups test strategies against AI opponents alone.
Progression Systems
Advancement stays confined to individual matches. Shared experience pools ensure balanced growth for all teammates, with perks becoming available at set level thresholds. No external gear or persistent stats carry forward, so every session begins on equal footing. This design suits players who prefer skill expression and in-match decision making over grinding for advantages between games.
Is It Worth Playing?
Runes of Shadow appeals to those who enjoy competitive team combat with both player and AI opponents. The absence of permanent progression removes barriers for new or returning players, while varied match sizes and objective-driven modes provide different pacing options. Arena formats suit quick sessions focused on direct skill, and MOBA-style play rewards coordinated strategy across larger maps. The planned additions of bigger war scenarios and standalone PvE content expand replay options for groups seeking variety. Players drawn to match-based action without external power curves will find the systems align closely with that preference.
