REQ/S is a strategy and simulation game built around managing the backend infrastructure of a growing startup website. Players handle servers, traffic routing, caches, and protective systems while traffic increases and unexpected problems arise from other parts of the company. The experience centers on constructing request paths and maintaining stability under pressure, with every decision affecting capacity, cost, and reliability.
Gameplay
The core loop involves placing infrastructure nodes on a board to form complete paths from the website to processed requests. Available components include load balancers, web servers, databases, caches, workers, filters, and CDNs. Each node carries tradeoffs: higher capacity raises purchase price, added protection increases response delay, and greater revenue potential can overwhelm unprepared systems. Nodes degrade under load, progressing through stages from fine to sweating, on fire, and eventually burnt out. Holding any node at full capacity for eight seconds causes permanent failure that removes its capacity and disrupts connected routes.
Between levels, players visit the operations hub to spend resources on permanent upgrades and select a limited set of temporary tools to carry forward. Website features can be added to generate extra revenue, though each one increases overall traffic demand. Runs end through bankruptcy, total outages, excessive dropped requests, or user abandonment during intense periods. The system supports fully offline play with no required internet connection after initial setup.
Game Modes
The eight-level career campaign forms the main structure. Players begin on probation and advance through connected stages that introduce budget cuts, acquisitions, and escalating demands. Resources such as money, upgrades, features, and built infrastructure persist across levels, while failing any objective ends the entire run. Completing the campaign unlocks endless mode, where the same systems continue indefinitely with the goal of achieving higher scores.
Fifteen optional red flag modifiers alter the campaign with stricter rules and higher score multipliers. These can be unlocked through specific accomplishments and combined in any number to increase difficulty through missing data, tighter limits, unstable income, or external interference. The game also includes 42 achievements tied to various performance milestones and completion goals.
Progression Systems
Each level presents multiple objectives that may need to be completed simultaneously, such as surviving a set duration, processing a target number of requests, meeting revenue targets, keeping dropped requests under a threshold, or maintaining response times during boss windows. Feature slots expand as the campaign advances, allowing more revenue sources while demanding greater infrastructure capacity. The persistent carryover of upgrades and infrastructure encourages careful planning, as choices made early influence later challenges.
Planned future support includes macOS compatibility and Steam Deck optimization, along with additional red flag options and expanded endless mode content. These elements build on the existing foundation of run-ending failure conditions and layered decision-making.
Is It Worth Playing?
REQ/S suits players who enjoy detailed management simulations that combine short-term improvisation with longer-term planning. The campaign structure with permanent failure on missed objectives creates tension, while endless mode offers continued challenge after completion. Red flag modifiers provide replayability for those seeking tougher conditions and higher scores. The game runs entirely offline and includes a substantial list of achievements for completionists. Its focus on infrastructure tradeoffs and system degradation rewards experimentation with node placement and resource allocation, making it a strong fit for fans of strategy and simulation titles that emphasize systems thinking over action or narrative elements.
