EVERYONE IS A WINNER
Two dollars at an estate sale on Pell Road. A shoebox marked M. VOSS – DO NOT PLAY. Inside, one tape: PLINKDOWN – CH.9 – 10/17/94.
PLINKDOWN aired at 3 AM on WKNT Channel 9, a UHF station that barely reached the next town over. The ratings diaries say forty thousand households were watching. Press play.
DROP. LIGHT. MEET YOUR QUOTA.
Aim the dropper, release the orb, and light every peg it touches. Amber stars build your multiplier, skulls explode, green clocks buy you another drop, and the pail at the bottom gives the orb back. Meet the quota before you run out of orbs, or the signal is lost.
BUILD SOMETHING TERRIBLE
Between segments, spend your winnings at the Commissary. 36 orbs, 88 charms, and services to polish, copy, fuse or throw out what's in your bag. Lean into a family (bombs, lightning, gems, splitters, ambers, money, pebbles or the eyes) and watch the shelf start leaning with you. Fuse a boomball with a gemstone and a chainball. Polish a turd until it becomes a diamond. Take a sponsor's deal if you can stomach the terms.
THE AUDIENCE IS WATCHING
The eyes on the board belong to them. Light one and they pay, but it costs you an orb, and they look back. Contestants who went before you break into the broadcast. The host smiles a little too long. Somewhere past level 12 the tape keeps going.
