LEGO Marvel's Avengers is an action-adventure game developed by Traveller's Tales and released for the PlayStation 4 in 2016. It follows the familiar LEGO formula of light combat, environmental puzzles, and collectible hunting while drawing its story and characters directly from Marvel Cinematic Universe films.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on progressing through linear story levels that recreate key scenes from The Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and supporting films such as Captain America: The First Avenger, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Players control multiple characters in each level, switching between them to use specific abilities that solve puzzles and defeat enemies. Common mechanics include smashing objects to reveal building pieces, activating switches with character powers, and completing short timed sequences for team attacks.
Eight hub areas expand the experience beyond the main levels. New York City serves as the primary open space, joined by locations including Asgard, the Helicarrier, Washington D.C., Sokovia, Malibu, South Africa, and the Bartons' farm. These zones contain side activities such as citizen rescues and races, along with opportunities to switch freely among unlocked characters. Over two hundred playable characters appear, each with distinct abilities like flight, projectile attacks, scanning for hidden objects, or strength-based smashing that influence both combat and puzzle solutions.
Co-operative play supports up to two players on the same console through split-screen that adjusts dynamically when partners separate. The PS4 version includes DualShock 4 vibration feedback and supports 720p to 1080p resolutions.
Game Modes
Story mode guides players through the main narrative levels in sequence, restricting character selection to those featured in the corresponding film scenes. Completion of the story unlocks Free Play, which allows any collected character to be used in previously completed levels for thorough exploration and collectible gathering.
Hub exploration functions as a persistent free-roam mode where players can travel between the eight areas, tackle optional side quests, and hunt for collectibles without level restrictions. Completionist activities include locating 150 minikits across the story levels, 15 red bricks that unlock gameplay modifiers, 35 Stan Lee in Peril rescues, character tokens, and gold bricks.
Collectibles and Progression
Progression rewards players with studs that purchase additional characters and red brick multipliers. True Avenger ratings require collecting a set stud total in each level, made easier once multipliers are active. Character tokens unlock new heroes and vehicles, while gold bricks track overall completion across levels and hubs. Many puzzles demand specific ability combinations, encouraging repeated visits in Free Play with different character selections.
Is It Worth Playing?
The game delivers a substantial amount of content through its fifteen story levels, bonus content, and expansive hubs filled with side activities. Reception has been mixed, with critics noting its adherence to the established LEGO template while praising the volume of characters and the light-hearted tone. On Steam the title holds a Very Positive rating based on thousands of user reviews. It suits players who enjoy methodical puzzle solving, short co-operative sessions, and MCU-inspired humor. Families and completionists find the most value, as the experience emphasizes exploration and repeated playthroughs over intense challenge. No ongoing updates or seasonal content exist, so the package remains exactly as released in 2016.
