Grimsorrow Academy is an idle RPG built around strategy and dark academia themes. Players sign an indenture to attend a school that never allows graduation, instead pushing deeper into forbidden knowledge through spellcasting and progression systems. Gameplay
The core loop centers on scrying an Obsidian Mirror to unlock and advance through fifteen Disciplines. Each Discipline offers actions that grant permanent perks once mastered, alongside opportunities to craft gear and potions. Attunement accumulates to unlock deeper crafts within the Academy.
Spells require manual tracing on the mirror surface rather than simple purchases. Players draw marks for instant Maledictions, sustained Litanies, or Bindings that handle scrying tasks independently. Stronger characters learn to automate certain examinations for true idle play.
After curfew, Night Errands send players into combat across 23 zones and 12 dungeons populated by more than 90 monsters. Unique drops and equipment sets feed into an Anvil system that reforges gear to higher levels, with risks of shattering. Eight umbra Sources power progression, supported by 12 draw-to-cast spells and 68 mirror upgrades.
Offline progress tracks honestly and delivers a Welcome Back report upon return. A 300-plus deed ledger and four-quadrant completion journey encourage thorough exploration of systems.
Game Modes
The experience remains single-player throughout, focused on one continuous save that functions as two interwoven games. The primary mode involves advancing through the school year via mirror scrying and Discipline mastery while managing spell costs against a balancing ledger.
Prestige occurs through repeated Indentures. Each new contract shatters the current mirror, resets certain elements, and rewards Seals that benefit future runs plus Oaths spent on a 16-node permanent tree. Players retain core power across these cycles while pushing further into the descent.
Tenure raises the level ceiling to 120 and opens layered realms beneath the Winding Stair, beginning with the Undercroft and continuing downward. The Maw lies further below, with additional depths gated during Early Access.
Progression and Systems
Mastery in each of the fifteen Disciplines, such as gravebotany or hexweaving, builds permanent Sigils and supports gear and potion creation for Night Errands. The prestige tree and deed system reward repeated playthroughs without resetting all gains.
Combat stays idle once Bindings and automations activate, yet requires initial setup through traced spells and equipment management. The Anvil provides incremental power through reforging while introducing breakage risks that demand careful resource decisions.
