Gloamsail: Captains of the Mist is a single-player action RPG adventure set in a mist-shrouded world where players take on the role of a lighthouse captain fighting to preserve what remains of the light.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on exploration across ten islands in the Shattered Sea, character development through class and origin selection, and real-time combat that can be paused for tactical commands. Players create a custom captain and select from four classes: Duelist, Gunner, Tide Witch, or Lightkeeper. Each origin choice influences available dialogue options during interactions with crew and island inhabitants.
Combat involves leading a party of four in blade-to-blade fights against pirates, soldiers, and Hollowed enemies. The pause system allows players to issue orders mid-battle before resuming direct control. Exploration focuses on sailing between the six remaining Last Lights and four Dark Lights, uncovering pieces of the backstory tied to the Pale Tide and the fallen Dawn Star.
Companion systems add depth through recruitment, approval mechanics, and optional romance paths that develop aboard the ship. Decisions about the lights encountered shape multiple endings, with the number of Dark Lights relit serving as a key variable.
Game Modes
Gloamsail: Captains of the Mist operates as a single-player experience with no separate multiplayer or competitive modes listed. The game emphasizes narrative progression through island visits, crew management, and choice-driven story branches rather than distinct game modes. All content unfolds in one continuous campaign where player actions determine the final outcomes across three primary ending paths.
Story and Setting
Centuries ago the Dawn Star fell into the sea and birthed the Pale Tide, a living mist that consumes light and memory. Ten pirate captains once used shards from the Star to build lighthouses against this tide, but only six lights remain active. As the youngest captain of the Lighthouse Brotherhood aboard the Last Light, the player investigates the night Lighthouse City's beacon fails and learns the founders' role in the world's drowning.
The antagonist Corvin Mourne leads the Drowned Armada with a goal to surrender the world to the mist. His perspective aligns partially with revelations about the original lighthouse builders, creating moral tension in the choices players face regarding whether to preserve, return, or share the remaining lights.
Is It Worth Playing?
Gloamsail: Captains of the Mist targets players who enjoy story-rich single-player RPGs with meaningful choices, party-based combat, and companion relationships. The real-time pause combat and class variety support tactical engagement, while the approval and romance systems reward attention to crew dynamics. With three endings influenced by light-related decisions and ten distinct islands each tied to different revelations, the structure supports replayability for those interested in exploring alternate paths.
The game remains in a coming-soon state with no user reviews or post-launch updates available yet. Fans of indie action RPG adventures that blend exploration, dialogue consequences, and party management may find the verified features align with their preferences once released.
