Following the Shadow is a free to play indie adventure visual novel set on PC. Players follow young alchemist Jacob after his shadow is taken by the Mistress in the Twisted Forest, forcing him into a journey across a realm with inverted rules where common items carry unexpected value and danger.
Gameplay
The experience centers on reading and decision making as Jacob navigates the far side of the river. Choices determine whether he leans on his alchemy knowledge or develops a talent for music. These decisions shape interactions with morally grey characters and influence the tone of events through dark humor. A grumpy owl serves as a constant companion during the trek through the grim, spellbinding atmosphere of the Twisted Forest and surrounding areas. The narrative emphasizes personal reliance and questions about light and darkness without providing easy answers.
Game Modes
Following the Shadow offers a single player narrative experience built around multiple playthrough paths. Players explore different routes by selecting alchemy focused actions or music based approaches at key moments. These branches lead to distinct outcomes across more than six endings. The structure encourages replaying the story to uncover variations in character relationships and resolutions within the 1 to 2 hour reading time per playthrough.
Story and Atmosphere
Jacob begins with a quiet life preparing to inherit his family trade, only for the theft of his shadow to upend everything. The world beyond the river operates under peculiar laws where dried beetles hold more worth than gold and gifts can act as curses. Butterflies pose greater threats than spiders. The tale explores survival through uncertain alliances and the tension between familiar skills and new abilities. The atmosphere remains consistently grim and spellbinding, supported by the presence of the owl companion who adds personality to the journey.
Is It Worth Playing?
Following the Shadow suits readers who enjoy choice driven visual novels with branching narratives and multiple endings. The short length makes it accessible for those seeking a focused story without long commitments. Verified elements include the core premise of the stolen shadow, the choice between alchemy and music, the owl companion, and the range of endings. Player feedback on available platforms highlights strong ratings for the atmosphere and character depth. It delivers value for fans of indie adventures that prioritize moral ambiguity and dark humor over extended gameplay systems. Those preferring complex mechanics or longer sessions may find the concise format limiting, while others will appreciate the tight, replayable structure.
