Floodworks is an indie adventure puzzle game built around marble maze mechanics on PC. Players tilt a round stone board to guide a steel ball through intricate circular labyrinths while water rises behind them and alters the environment in real time.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on rolling the ball toward the locked center of each board. Water enters the corridors left behind and eventually reaches the golden wheel that opens the goal. Timing becomes essential because the rising water often blocks the return path, forcing players to seek shelter in dead ends or activate temporary drains. Drain plates pull water back for short windows, one-way pits transport the ball to new rooms with the flood in pursuit, and braziers must be lit before water arrives. Pipes, grates, and pressure-sensitive wheels create unexpected water flow patterns, while some doors remain open only while water stands at their mechanism. A second released water pocket can swap which doors are open or closed, adding another layer of environmental manipulation.
Boards feature dark surfaces and progressively dimming lights that heighten the tension as water advances. Controls support mouse, keyboard, or gamepad, with full controller navigation through every menu. A risk multiplier rewards players who stay close to the waterline, and each board is procedurally generated from a seed yet always contains at least one reliable solution path.
Game Modes
Expeditions form the main campaign structure. Twelve expeditions each contain five boards. The first ten expeditions introduce fresh mechanics one at a time and then combine them with earlier elements. Expeditions eleven and twelve shift to longer boards divided into multiple zones. Players select one of three difficulty levels before starting, and a hint system reveals only the immediate next step when needed.
Labyrinths offers a separate challenge mode consisting of twelve waves of tide mazes. Each board grants five lives, and every wave layers on a new rule. Wall rings begin to rotate, wind pushes the ball off course, the tide surges higher, floor tiles crumble underfoot, lights extinguish, and the final wave sends water chasing directly behind the ball.
Free play allows access to any unlocked board without campaign restrictions. The game includes eleven core water puzzles alongside the longer multi-zone boards found in later expeditions.
Visuals and Atmosphere
Ten distinct flooded halls provide the settings. These include a sluice chamber, water clock hall, flooded library, old greenhouse, observatory, apothecary, salt grotto, ship's hold, and two additional halls. Each location supports four lighting conditions: sunset, day, moonlight, and fire. The combination of dimming lights, reflective water surfaces, and shifting shadows creates a consistent sense of pressure that matches the rising flood mechanics.
Is It Worth Playing?
Floodworks suits players who enjoy deliberate puzzle solving that rewards precise timing and spatial awareness rather than fast reflexes. The interplay between ball movement and dynamic water creates a distinctive loop where every decision carries immediate environmental consequences. Support for multiple input methods and an interface available in nine languages broadens accessibility. Those who appreciate single-player puzzle experiences with layered mechanics and optional risk-reward elements will find the expeditions and Labyrinths mode provide substantial depth. The game stands as a focused indie title centered on its core water-and-maze concept without additional layers that dilute the central challenge.
