Chemtris is a falling-block puzzle game for PC that blends classic color-matching mechanics with strategic depth through chain reactions and special power-ups. Players rotate and drop groups of two or three colored blocks into a well, aiming to connect four or more of the same color to clear them from the board. The real payoff comes from the cascades that follow, as cleared blocks cause everything above to fall and potentially trigger additional matches for much higher scores.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around careful placement and foresight. Every drop influences the board state, and successful clears can set off long chains that multiply points dramatically. Larger groups of five or more leave behind a core specific to their color. These cores include bombs that blast surrounding areas, lasers that wipe entire rows, acid that eats downward through columns, vortexes that remove one color entirely, starbursts that clear diagonals, and jokers that act as wildcards while powering up fusions.
Cores can be triggered immediately or saved for later use. When two cores interact, they fuse into stronger effects, such as two bombs creating a mega nuke or a bomb paired with a laser producing a cross-shaped blast. A joker doubles the power of whatever it combines with. This system rewards planning several moves ahead, since one well-timed fusion can clear large portions of the board at once.
Game Modes
Chemtris offers several distinct ways to play that cater to different preferences. Arcade mode provides an endless run that increases in speed with each level. Players can choose Normal, Cocktail with some three-block pieces, or Polymer limited to three-block pieces, across Normal, Hard, or Expert difficulties, each with its own online leaderboard.
Lab Expedition functions as a roguelite experience where every shift sets a score quota and limits the number of pieces available. Meeting the quota lets players spend earnings in a shop on relics that alter the rules, while surviving inspections that introduce obstacles like steel columns, barriers, falling junk, or mold. Raising the Heat applies five tougher rule sets for added challenge.
Adventure mode delivers an endless run in which each new level presents three cards. Selecting a card grants benefits but also imposes drawbacks, ensuring every attempt feels unique. Daily Reaction uses one shared seed per day with unlimited attempts, and the best performance appears on that day's leaderboard. Lab Training consists of short lessons focused on groups, cores, and fusions to help players master the systems.
Features and Progression
Over one hundred relics can be collected and combined, supported by a collection and research system that gradually unlocks more options. Inspections dynamically change shift rules with elements like steel columns, barriers, falling junk blocks, and mold. Online leaderboards track performance in Arcade, Adventure, and Daily Reaction modes, including a friends view for comparison. The game includes 54 achievements along with local records, supports both keyboard and gamepad with rebindable controls, and offers options to reduce flashing and adjust screen shake. It is available in English, Dutch, Spanish, and German.
Is It Worth Playing?
Chemtris suits players who enjoy puzzle games that reward precision, pattern recognition, and long-term planning over pure reflexes. The combination of familiar block-dropping with layered core and fusion mechanics creates satisfying moments when a single move clears half the board. Multiple modes provide variety, from competitive endless runs and daily challenges to roguelite progression and guided training. As an Early Access title, it is already playable from start to finish, with the developer actively expanding content based on player input. Those who appreciate strategic depth in casual puzzle formats will likely find it engaging, especially if they enjoy experimenting with different relics and rule variations across repeated runs.
