Cave Alchemist is a falling-sand roguelite adventure game for PC in which every pixel reacts to player actions through detailed physics simulation. The core experience centers on descending procedurally generated caves as a small wizard cat armed with a wand, navigating six distinct biomes while managing resources and reactions among powders, liquids, gases, and fire.
Gameplay
The simulation treats every grain of sand, drop of water, and lick of flame as an independent element that interacts with the environment. Lava solidifies into rock upon contact with water, acid eats through stone, oil spreads across water and ignites along its length, and frost bolts turn ponds into solid ice. Gunpowder seams and pockets of swamp gas explode from stray sparks. Wooden crates and rock chunks function as physical objects that can be kicked down slopes, floated across lakes, or launched skyward by explosions, while cave ceilings can collapse under stress.
Players wield a wand that fires spells in sequence from left to right, functioning like a deck of cards. Available spells include projectiles such as Spark Bolt, Bomb, Fireball, Frost Bolt, Thunderbolt, Black Hole, and Chainsaw, along with jets that spray water, oil, acid, lava, sand, or gunpowder. Modifiers add effects like Homing, Bounce, Piercing Shot, Burning Trail, Explosive, or Gravity, and multicasts such as Double, Triple, Quadruple, or Scatter Cast combine multiple spells in one cast. Combinations produce effects ranging from devastating area damage to practical solutions like flooding ledges or carving escape tunnels. Flasks of strange liquids can be poured, drunk, or thrown, and a material brush allows direct painting of sand, water, lava, and other elements into the world for experimentation.
Between levels, players reach the Sanctum to heal, refill spells, spend gold on new wands and spells, and select from 29 perks that stack and combine, such as vampire fangs or explosion-proof hide. Every fifth level features a larger boss guarding the descent. Runs save automatically for later continuation, and full controller support extends to wand editing.
Game Modes
Cave Alchemist operates as a singleplayer roguelite with a consistent progression structure across runs. Each attempt generates fresh tunnels, hidden pools, and creatures that hop, fly, spit acid, cast spells, or burrow through rock across the six biomes: the Mines, the Coal Pits, the Frozen Depths, the Overgrown Jungle, the Vault, and the Inferno. The loop involves descending through these levels while adapting to the reactive environment, reaching the Sanctum for upgrades, and facing bosses at regular intervals. Procedural generation ensures varied layouts and creature placements each time, while the wand editor and perk choices allow different approaches to the same challenges without altering the fundamental descent structure.
Key Mechanics and Features
Pixel-level physics drive all interactions, with powders, liquids, gases, and fire reacting realistically to each other and to physical objects. Fully destructible caves allow creative problem-solving through digging, flooding, burning, or freezing. The drag-and-drop wand editor supports mixing 45 spells for tailored builds, while 100 Steam achievements track progress with unique hand-drawn cat icons. Steam Cloud saves lifetime stats and achievement data for ongoing tracking across sessions.
Is It Worth Playing?
Cave Alchemist suits players who enjoy deep simulation systems, experimental spell crafting, and roguelite runs that reward adaptation to unpredictable physics interactions. The combination of procedural caves, reactive elements, and modular wand building creates varied problem-solving opportunities across repeated attempts. Those seeking a focused singleplayer experience with persistent meta-progression through perks and spell unlocks will find the structure engaging, particularly if they appreciate precise control over environmental reactions rather than linear combat or narrative paths. The game remains available on PC with automatic save support for flexible play sessions.
