Boris & the Second Sun is an indie comedy visual novel set on a single PC platform. The story follows an ordinary evening that spirals into financial chaos when debt collectors arrive and the protagonist's cat, Boris, reveals his plan to build a second sun. Players read through dialogue, examine documents, answer phone calls, and make choices that shape negotiations and outcomes in this short, story-driven experience.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on reading narrative text and responding to situations that unfold in a single apartment setting. Players inspect suspicious paperwork scattered around the room, handle an incoming call from Mum, and interact with unexpected elements like a tiny civilization that declares independence in the bathtub. Conversations with the debt collectors require careful replies, while Boris provides increasingly elaborate explanations for his ambitious project. Optional side conversations and hidden clues appear throughout the evening, allowing players to gather information that influences the final negotiation terms. The writing mixes absurd humor with everyday frustrations, such as household items demanding better conditions, keeping the pace light and focused on character interactions rather than complex systems.
Game Modes
The main experience follows a linear story path interrupted by player choices that branch into different dialogue options and revelations. These decisions accumulate to determine one of three possible endings, each reflecting varying degrees of success in resolving the debt situation. A separate puzzle element called Solar Dispatch runs alongside the narrative in a dedicated sequence. In this mode, players allocate limited energy resources across three demands: a laundry service, the independent bathtub city, and Boris's lunch. The puzzle spans exactly six turns with no time pressure, and players can request a suggested allocation or retry the sequence before continuing the story regardless of the result. This integration adds a light strategic layer without shifting the overall focus away from the comedy visual novel format.
Story and Choices
The narrative builds around the tension of an unplanned evening that mixes personal debt with increasingly surreal developments. Boris's business plan involves borrowing a large sum to construct a second sun, leaving the player as the guarantor responsible for the fallout. Choices range from straightforward replies during collector conversations to more investigative actions like examining contracts or engaging with the bathtub residents. These selections affect the details of the final deal, such as payment terms or additional obligations, while maintaining the game's short overall length. The tone stays consistently comedic, highlighting the gap between Boris's grand ambitions and the practical consequences that follow.
Is It Worth Playing?
Boris & the Second Sun suits players who enjoy short, choice-driven visual novels with strong comedic writing and light puzzle integration. The experience emphasizes reading, dialogue selection, and occasional resource management over extended campaigns or combat. With three distinct endings tied to player decisions and an optional puzzle that can be approached flexibly, it offers replay value for those interested in exploring different negotiation paths. Availability on PC makes it accessible for quick sessions focused on story and humor rather than long-term progression. Those seeking a focused, absurd take on everyday financial stress mixed with inventive side elements will find the game aligns well with that preference.
