Boards and Brimstone is an indie roguelite skiing game for PC in which players control an imp carving down real-world slopes while battling mountain spirits with hellish powers.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on repeated descents through a faithfully recreated ski area in the French Alps. Players start at the base and unlock lifts progressively to reach higher, more challenging terrain. Each run involves carving, tucking, braking, and jumping while avoiding or confronting enemies that begin with snowmen and rolling snowballs before escalating to powerful angry creatures. Survival determines how far the day advances, with longer runs triggering higher difficulty and nastier spirits.
Upgrades come through dozens of cards that provide abilities such as fireballs, swarms, traps, and shields. These cards level up during a run and alter both the imp's appearance and combat style. Players select cards tied to one of four demon princes to build allegiance and unlock corresponding powers, creating distinct builds each attempt. The roguelite structure ensures every descent feels fresh through different card combinations and escalating threats.
At the end of each day the imp returns to The Brimstone, an open-air après bar. Baal the barman serves brews and handles payments to unlock the next lifts, tying progression directly to performance on the slopes.
Game Modes
The game operates as a single-player roguelite focused on short, intense descents. There are no separate named modes beyond the daily runs that form the central experience. Each session follows the same structure of descending slopes, collecting upgrades, facing spirits, and returning to The Brimstone to advance the lift unlocks and difficulty.
Progression and Exploration
Exploration revolves around unlocking real-world lifts one by one to access harder sections of the modeled French Alps ski area. The roguelite elements emphasize repeated attempts where card choices and survival time shape the outcome. Four demon princes offer branching allegiance paths that influence available upgrades and visual changes to the character.
Controls support both keyboard and mouse or gamepad, allowing precise movement for carving and jumping on the slopes. The cartoon style with bold outlines pairs with an electro and metal soundtrack that intensifies during rides.
Is It Worth Playing?
Boards and Brimstone suits players who enjoy roguelite runs built around precise movement and incremental power growth through card upgrades. The single-player focus on short descents with escalating spirits and lift-based progression offers a distinctive skiing theme combined with demonic arsenal building. Those drawn to cartoon visuals, reactive soundtracks, and the satisfaction of mastering slopes while managing limited survival time will find a cohesive indie experience centered on repeated attempts and build experimentation.
