Blackbriar Crypt is a singleplayer turn-based strategy RPG with roguelite elements built around spatial inventory management on PC. Gameplay

A cleaver next to oil might enable a sweeping attack, while Greekfire beside a torch could ignite an entire pack for area damage.
Combat unfolds on compact tactical grids where positioning matters as much as the abilities unlocked beforehand. Players move three mercenaries, protect vulnerable team members, and activate pack-based powers during short, lethal turns. Builds emerge from item restrictions unique to each archetype, with some mercenaries favoring heavy armor while others excel at weaponizing poisons or cursed objects.
Each run sends the warband through branching maps that include combat encounters, shops, events, shrines, and boss fights. Death ends the expedition, yet relics and unlocks carry over to a persistent Hideout that gradually expands available gear and mercenary options for future attempts.
Game Modes
The game offers a singleplayer experience focused on repeated roguelite runs. There are no separate multiplayer or co-op modes. Every session follows the same structure of selecting three mercenaries from nine archetypes, navigating one of three regions, and surviving until the boss or total defeat. Persistent progress through the Hideout serves as the main meta layer, rewarding completed runs with new starting options and signature gear rather than altering the core singleplayer loop.
Runs vary through random encounter tables and item drops within each region, but the fundamental mode remains the same: permadeath expeditions that reward careful packing and adaptive tactics over long campaigns.
Regions and Mercenaries
Three distinct regions form the campaign structure. The Plagued Hamlet introduces early threats tied to disease and close-quarters fighting. The Forest of Hangings shifts toward mobile enemies and environmental hazards. The Black Cathedral presents the final challenges with more structured encounters and the primary boss. Each area features its own enemy roster, item pool, and dedicated boss fight.
Nine mercenary archetypes provide variety in starting gear and item compatibility. Archetypes include the Witch-hunter, Plague Doctor, Templar, Apostate, Sin-eater, Bone-Setter, Hollow Bride, Flagellant, and Gallows-Born. Differences in stats and restrictions encourage distinct approaches, such as armor-focused tanking or poison-centric offense, across multiple runs.

Blackbriar Crypt targets players who enjoy tactical roguelites where inventory arrangement directly shapes combat outcomes. The spatial packing system creates meaningful decisions before every fight, and the limited grid size keeps complexity manageable while still allowing creative combos. Persistent unlocks through the Hideout provide steady progression between runs without removing the risk of permadeath.
The game remains in development with Early Access planned for Q4 2026. Current plans include the full core loop, all three regions, nine mercenaries, and nearly one hundred items once released. No player reviews or ratings exist yet because the title has not launched.
