Ancient Bloods: Shadowborn Rising is a 2.5D side-scrolling action roguelite set in a mythic version of Predynastic Ancient Egypt. Survival depends on managing a limited energy supply that functions as both time and life, rather than a conventional health bar. Players control characters on villain-origin journeys, beginning with the priest Apep, as they navigate temples, deserts, coastal cities, settlements, and hidden ruins while racing to reach successive Anchors before energy runs out.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on repeated pushes from established Anchors. Each attempt sends the player through combat encounters, traversal sections, and optional side challenges. Enemy strikes stagger movement and drain energy directly, turning every confrontation into a calculated risk. Reaching the next Anchor resets the timer for the following segment and serves as a checkpoint for future runs.
Resources collected during these pushes include Silver, which carries over to improve starting conditions on later attempts, and Fragments that unlock additional chaos abilities. Accumulating sufficient power allows players to forge Keys of Eternity, which expand a character's capabilities and bring them closer to their full potential. Routes vary in safety and reward, encouraging players to weigh shorter, riskier paths against longer, more stable ones. Puzzle elements appear in certain areas alongside combat and movement challenges.
Progression ties directly to adaptation between runs. Mistakes cost time that cannot be recovered within a single push, forcing tighter execution and better route selection on subsequent tries. The setting draws from ancient Egyptian aesthetics but presents a darker, more chaotic interpretation filled with unseen influences.
Game Modes
The game operates entirely in a single-player format built around roguelite runs. Each session follows the Anchor-based structure, where players advance through connected spaces until energy depletes or an Anchor is secured. There are no separate multiplayer or co-operative options confirmed at this stage.
Character paths introduce variation within the same framework. The initial path follows Apep and emphasizes the time-pressure mechanics. Additional paths, planned for later updates, will alter movement, combat approach, and survival priorities while retaining the central energy system. These shifts may emphasize different traversal techniques or combat styles without changing the overall roguelite loop of push, return, and upgrade.
Setting and Progression
The world spans a range of environments drawn from Predynastic Egypt, including sacred temples, open deserts, bustling coastal settlements, and concealed ruins. Some locations incorporate stranger, otherworldly elements that contrast with the historical backdrop. Lore moments tied to Anchors gradually reveal details about each character's bloodline and motivations.
Upgrades and unlocks accumulate across runs. Silver strengthens future starting states, Fragments expand ability options, and Keys of Eternity provide deeper character-specific progression. The six planned paths each focus on a distinct villain origin, allowing players to experience different ways of moving through and claiming power in the same world.
Current Development State
Ancient Bloods: Shadowborn Rising remains in active development by the independent studio 01 Aspects. A free demo is planned to collect player feedback before full release, and systems such as visuals, balance, and content may continue to change. The title is listed as coming soon on PC with no confirmed release window.
Is It Worth Playing?
The time-based survival system and Anchor progression create a focused roguelite experience that rewards precise timing and route planning over traditional combat endurance. Players who enjoy single-player runs that emphasize adaptation between attempts and resource management will find the core loop distinctive. Those interested in the planned variety of character paths and the mythic Egyptian setting may want to follow development updates. With a demo scheduled, interested players can evaluate the mechanics directly once it becomes available. No player reviews or ratings exist yet due to the pre-release status.
